NEAFL SPRING 2014 CHAMPIONS !!!!!

THE DELAWARE FIRE

Atlantic City–Ernie Manna threw two touchdown passes, and the Delaware Fire’s defense returned a fumble for a touchdown as the Delaware Fire defeated the South Jersey Phoenix 20-18 in the inaugural NEAFL Bowl.  South Jersey quarterback Magic Mears threw a late fourth quarter touchdown to tight end Steve Lewallan. However, the Fire were able to hold off the late charge by the Phoenix and win the game

The Delaware Fire merged with the Delaware County Cowboys for the 2014 season. “The way this team came together in about four weeks, you could not have asked for anything more. When two separate teams come together and make one family, I have never felt something like that in my life. We could not have done it without each other” said linebacker Steve Manerchia. Manerchia, who was later named NEAFL MVP, had an interception in the game.  “I just felt a slant coming. He looked it down, and I was just in the right spot at the right time.”

Another key play in the game occurred when Fire linebacker Jose Matos recovered a fumble and lateralled the ball to Eric Durham, who ran in for a touchdown. “The Cowboys players had been to three straight conference championships, so they were hungry. It came down to who was hungrier, and we were hungrier than they were.”

The final key component in the game was a war between both team’s offensive and defensive lines. The Phoenix and the Fire gave their quarterbacks ample time into throw and at times both lines looked dominant in the running game. The Fire’s offensive line, just like the rest of the team, was a hodge-podge of players from different teams. “The first couple games were rough” stated guard T.J. Burgos. “After we settled down and got on the same page, we just started rocking.”

The 2014 NEAFL season will come to a close Saturday, June 28, when the Northern Conference will take on the Southern Conference in Jackson, N.J. Game time is 7 p.m.

NEAFL NORTH CONFERENCE TITLE 2014

The (1) South Jersey Phoenix will host the (2) New Jersey Spartans on Sunday @4pm at the Vineland Midget Football Field on 3rd and Chestnut Ave in Vineland, NJ. The last time these 2 teams met it was a 18-12 dog fight with the Phoenix coming out on top in week 3 of the regular season.

The Phoenix will be led by QB Magic Mears and the Spartans are led by QB Dvon McGleese both QB’s have gotten their teams in a position to take the Title. Both teams defenses are at the top of the league with the Phoenix leading the league with only 44 points scored on them all year in regular season and the Spartans giving up 58.

Players to watch out for:
Spartans CB #3 Dante Bennett, who  a record breaking and game-winning interception return for a TD is the Lock-Down CB in the secondary.  The Phoenix better be careful if they throw the ball cause Dante will bring it to the house.
On the other side, Phoenix DE #91 Dom Townsend, could be the #1 DE in the league. He is fast off the ball and quick to his target. If the Spartans do not block Townsend and contain the outside they will have problems.

This is sure to be a game you wouldn’t want to miss.

NEAFL SOUTH CONFERENCE TITLE 2014

The Delaware Fire will host the Delmarva Tyrants on Saturday at 1pm. The last time these 2 faced off the Fire came up with a 16-0 shut out in week 7.

The Fire will be lead by QB Ernie Manna and the Tyrants by QB Dwight Dennis. The Fire and Tyrants Defenses are very close with allowing only 63 points for the Fire and the 62 for the  Tyrants during the regular season.
Key Players to Watch: Fire MLB #44 Steve Manerchia has played solid football all year. He at one point had more points then some offenses in the league. He’s a tackle to tackle hard nose gap filler, who will get the job done in the middle. Steve has about 7 INTs on the year as well so the Tyrants better watch the short passes.

On the other side, Tyrants DT #98 Carlos Briddell and DE #28 Demetries Fountain is the sack leaders of the Tyrants. Fountain comes with explosiveness and gets lots of preasure, while Briddell takes care of things between the tackles. The Fire will need to contain these two and keep preasure off of their QB.
